Some inspiration

Or blatant plagiarism.. aheh.

This is a sculpture at the Arizona State University. The path and its subsequent skin will loop or curve/deviate something like the sculpture. I think it's pretty cool.

Topic confirmation

Just so that I don't confuse myself, I'm repeating what the goal of this project is.

I'm trying to study the effects that skin has on interpretation depending on the scale it is viewed from. Earlier I showed the Martha und Daniel Gantenbein by Bearth & Deplazes Architeckten, where clever use of brick laying made it seem like there were bubbles in the wall.

The project below is the Taiwan Solar Powered Stadium by Toyo Ito. He's done some stuff. Good stuff. The entire roof is actually made up of solar panels, so the skin can be interpreted at different levels. From far away, it's a funky blue curved roof. Maybe reflecting the colour of the sky. Closer though, they're 8,844 solar panels (yep, that's right) and the blue is determined by the solar panels.

The skin has also become a function, something that wouldn't be interpreted from a long distance. It's similar to what I'm trying to achieve with the bridge, not that I want the skin to be a function, more that I want it to be interpreted at more than one scale.

On a side note... imagine having to be the one to keep those solar panels clean. It's like a massive bird toilet just waiting to be used. Damn birds.



Support column location

Unless I'm planning to make it one big solid lump (I'm not), the bridge will need columns. Otherwise it er... won't stay up.

The green circles are the obvious locations for the columns, the position may change slightly depending on the final path of the bridge.

Path creating in rhino

Since I already have a fair idea of the dimensions of the ramp, ie:

clearance height - 4.4m
depth of path - 200mm - 350mm accounting for structure
min. ramp length required - 66.5m

I've started making a path in rhino, the length where the ramp starts and where it hits the road is about 70m long, so there's no issue there. The shape will change a little according to the constraints etc. that I've previously mentioned.
